New verse with [livejournal.com profile] malcolmeffect

Daniel tossed his pencil at the mess on his desk with a frustrated sound. He leaned back in the chair with a sigh, running his hands through his hair. "I give up. I'm just not seeing it."

The it being a translation he'd been working on for about 36 hours straight. Which equaled out to about 15 cups of coffee and 5 pencils worth. Now the text was starting to look like a bunch of squiggles, no matter how often he adjusted his glasses.

The text had been found on a mostly deserted planet, PT-586. The building structures there seemed to say there had once been an advanced culture...but it seemed to have disappeared into thin air. All that was left was their writings. There was a pattern, but it just didn't follow any languages Jackson was familiar with. The letters were a collection of dashes, dots, and circles. More of a methodical code than anything...

Code...methodical...

"That has to be it," Daniel said aloud. "It's a math based language...which means I'm a bit out of my league." He picked up the phone, calling General Hammond. He was going to need help on this one.

Daniel led him to the control room which had the usual military personell in it. Beyond it through the bullet proof glass was the gate room, the Stargate sitting quietly on it's mounts and the ramp underneath it.

Daniel of course had forgotten that he had yet to explain all of this, he was setting the papers along a small area next to a computer station and asking one of the techs to punch up Origin for Dr. Malcolm.

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ian had stopped dead still when he first got a look at the Stargate through the glass. He hadn't seen anything like it and wondered what it was.

"Ok, um, this is Tasha, she's one of our techs and she's well versed in Origin so she can put in anything you need." Daniel saw that Ian's attention was elsewhere.
"Oh! Right, that. That is, um..." Daniel tried to think of the best way to put this. But he was saved by the bell.
Red lights started to flash and alarms going off. The tech behind the main desk spoke through the PA system while everyone started moving around faster. "Offworld activation! Incoming traveler!"

The Stargate was turning, lights turning on in the chevrons around the edges. It activated as the last one locked into place and the blue whoosh of the wormhole swooshed it's way through the gateroom and back into the circle, making a glowing blue pool.

A few seconds later, SG4 team came through on schedule from their mission.

Ian was startled and fascinated in equal portions when the gate began to work. The scurrying people held almost as much interest as the mechanism itself. He wondered if that was a time traveling mechanism but didn't voice it. Instead he asked.

What is that?

"That is what we call a Stargate. It's a...sort of portal to other gates that are scattered around the galaxy. We use it to travel to other planets..." Time to let the cat out of the bag. "Which is where we found the buildings with the text I couldn't identify."

"This is the SGC or Stargate Command. You're actually under Cheyanne Mountain, the Norad project...or at least that's it's official purpose. Our project gets the much lower levels.
Sorry, this is probably alot to take in at once..."

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Malcolm listened but he was still looking out the glass at the Stargate. What planet is it from?

I work for Hammond. I'm used to..uh.. surprises. Ian finally turned away from the window to face daniel.

"Well, from here actually. At an archeological dig on the Giza plateau in Egypt in the '40s. We only just recently figured out that the 39 symbols around the edge were used in a 7 symbol sequence like an address to another gate."
Daniel quick drew a cube on a nearby whiteboard, dotting the sides. "6 symbols needed to locate a point in space and the 7th as the point of origin," he said, making another dot a distance away from the cube and drawing a line to it.

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ian really didn't need the diagram but he joined Daniel at the wipe board nodding. This is very similar to what will come out of those equations.

[identity profile] stargatejackson.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Daniel turned to him, very interested. "Really? So these equations...might be related to the Stargate itself?"

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Ian picked up the other marker. Except they align this way.

He drew the same number of points on a cube but the points were connected in such a way that they formed a horizontal and vertical square whose corners were the center points of the cube's sides.

The last equation may be zero. If it is the point of relation is in the center of both squares and the cube.

Ian placed a dot in the center of the drawing.

[identity profile] stargatejackson.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
"That's interesting...not exactly helpful yet but interesting. If we only knew what it meant..."

Daniel got a hunch and flipped through the pictures again, finding the one with the cube on the center of the floor in the room they had found and stuck it up next to the diagram. "You don't suppose they meant the center of this? They, whoever they are or were, devoted this whole elaborate thing to tell us there's a middle to this square?"

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ian looked between the picture and the drawing. Are you sure the cube is solid?

It didn't seem likely to Ian but maybe there was something inside of it.

[identity profile] stargatejackson.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Daniel shrugged. "As far as we know...we didn't xray it or anything."

He considered. "We might have to go back there to find out."

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ian shrugged too. We should graph the equations. If there is a connection..uh. it will be more apparent.

"Right, good idea." Daniel pointed at him as if to emphasize what he was saying as he backed up towards the door. "I'll let General Hammond know what we've got so far and you and Tasha can get those together. He'll probably want a meeting once we have them." He turned and exited the control room, heading towards the General's office.

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ian nodded in understanding. Back in the conference room?

After Daniel left Ian took a seat beside Tasha to work on getting the graphs done. The more he saw the visualizations the more Malcolm understood what he was working with. It seemed to him that they were tracking something. What, Ian had no way of understanding.

Daniel returned a half hour later with the General following behind him. He'd wanted to see for himself what sort of breakthrough the two men had come up with.
"Dr. Malcolm, this is General Hammond. He's in charge of the SGC."
The General nodded and offered a firm handshake. "Glad to have you aboard." He indicated the screen that they were working on. "What am I looking at here?"

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-05 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ian stood when the two men entered the room and shook the General's hand just as firmly before turning back to where he had taped the equation maps up to the windows in SGC.

These are the separate equations that the symbols seem to represent. Ian moved past the separate ones because he really didn't think either of these men would understand if he explained them in depth. The final one was all the graphs superimposed into one image. To most wit would probably look like a bunch of colored scribble.

When the equations are mapped together it describes the trajectory of a object moving in a regular pattern between the six points shown in black.

Ian looked down at the woman who had been working with him. He still didn't believe what she had explained but really, was it any more ludicrous than living dinosaurs?

If this is a planet and another gate it would be in a system with an irregular orbit. It follows very similar deviation to what you would expect from a twin star system that has a star of large, low density and one of small, high density. The variable oscillations in the equations is constant with the change in gravitational pull when the planet passes from the influence of the larger star to the smaller.

Ian smiled. Uh.. that is if these symbols represent these equations.

[identity profile] stargatejackson.livejournal.com 2009-05-06 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
The General considered for a second, making sure he was following that complicated explanation. "So let me get this straight...the room is talking about a planet? With another gate on it? Is it this planet?"
Daniel shook his head. "No, this planet doesn't have a second star, just the one. And there's also the possibility that there might be something inside of this cube too." He pointed at the picture in question.

"Something useful?" General Hammond asked.
"Well, we don't know. Not till we get a chance to see it again. At least, that's my opinion."
The General hesitated for a second, making his decision. "Ok, SG3 can go with you, Dr. Jackson. Report back if you find anything. You leave at 1500 hours."

Daniel turned to Ian. "Would you come too? I'm not much of a mathe....chaotician and you do have clearance now."

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-06 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ian nodded. Without a scale there's no way to know what the application is.

Ian thought it over and nodded. When was he going to get to travel through time or space or whatever this gate did. How long will I be gone?

[identity profile] stargatejackson.livejournal.com 2009-05-06 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Not long I would think...we'll probably be back today if all goes well. We'll have to get suited up though. Follow me."
Daniel led the way to where they kept the gear for SG3. Most of the team was starting to assemble, already changed into their green fatigues and checking their weapons and gear.

Daniel handed Ian some fatigues for himself with SG3 badges on the shoulders of the sleeves and also a flat touchscreen laptop computer. "Figured you might need this too." He hurried off and returned changed into his uniform as well.

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-06 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ian followed though he still had a question for General Hammond. It had nothing to do with the mission. He took the green fatigues and frowned.

Uh.. do these come in black? It wasn't the most serious question and he looked around at the others as he took the laptop. That he set down before going to change. It would take Ian longer because of his leg. He finally came out fussing with the fatigues. He wasn't fond of them.

[identity profile] stargatejackson.livejournal.com 2009-05-06 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the team was already assembled in the Gate Room, Daniel and Ian were the last two to arrive. Daniel was working on putting a couple of notes on paper into his pack and clipping his military helmet on his head. "Ever been on a mission like this?" he asked Ian.

The Captain who was leading the team was briefing his four men, he really didn't have to brief the other two, them being civillians and they probably knew more about what was going on than he did. When he was done, he gave a nod to the General who was standing in the control room above. "Dial it up," the General said and the Stargate's inner circle began to spin.

[identity profile] malcolmeffect.livejournal.com 2009-05-06 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ian hated the uniform and was sure it looked worse with the cane. He didn't care much for it but he had no idea where he was going. Ian stepped up beside Daniel.

Unless if involves dinosaurs, no.

Ian was fascinated by the gate. It wasn't the architecture but what kind of mathematics might be involved in what it supposedly did. Ian watched the gate locking in the sequence but his mind was on all those equations.

Daniel gave him a curious look but there really wasn't time to ask him further about it.

"Chevron 7, locked." The technician said over the PA as the gate filled with a blue liquid that whooshed at them at a great speed and then snapped back into the circle, creating the blue liquid pool that glowed as it moved.

SG3 was mobilizing and they made their way through the gate by twos, weapons at the ready. Jackson and Malcolm were the last to walk up the ramp.
"It's a bit of a rush, just as a heads up," Daniel offered some advice. "Oh and, don't hold your breath." He stepped into the event horizon and disappeared.
